Commentary: When it comes to penalties for dangerous and careless driving, what’s fair and effective?

Our Director, Mark Yeo, has recently written a commentary for CNA regarding the sentencing regime for offences under the Road Traffic Act, and why there appears to be a disparity between the legislature's and the public's views on whether our road traffic laws are sufficiently stiff.

He argues that, to understand why this perception gap exists, it is first necessary to understand the legislative framework for road traffic offences before we can understand why the punishment does not always appear to befit the outcome of the offence. He then explores how this perception gap may be narrowed.
